Deck Types: Aggro

There’s an old article from last millenium by Mike Flores called Who’s the Beatdown?, which is still available on SCG.com. Its about assignment of who is the beatdown and who is the control and what can result from not understanding this.

What I’m talking about today, are the decks that want to be the beatdown in most situations.

The New Block Structure and Changes to the Magic Year

If you haven’t read MaRo’s article for today, you should probably before proceeding here.

The core of the issue: In the future, there will be two blocks of two sets each year, and they are dropping the Core Set. This also means there will be changes to rotation.

Weakness of Netdecking

Last Sunday I was at the Helsinki WMCQ (World Magic Cup Qualifier). I didn’t do very well, but I did come up with something to write about, which is a small bonus.

One of my opponents, who was generally played much more precisely than is even necessary for a competitive tournament and asked stopped the game a couple of times to ask judges very involved questions on pretty simple situations, and didn’t want me to hear those questions.

There’s nothing wrong with that. Just felt a bit too much, as I am trying to have fun in these events, despite their competitive nature.

What actually gave me something to write about was that when it was time to sideboard, he pulled out a folder with pages upon pages of notes on different matchups.

Geek Services in Utrecht

Couple of weeks ago I was in Utrecht for the Magic: the Gathering Grand Prix, which is the highest level open tournament in the game. As usual, I regard these more like excuses to visit certain cities, so why not stay a full week at the former capital of the Kingdom of Holland.

One of the points of interests in the city for me personally, was Oudegracht (the Old Canal), as for some peculiar reason, there are seven shops dedicated to all things geeky (although, I seem to have missed one).

The Problems with Modern Format

I should note that I don’t really play Modern. I do every once in a while, usually to horrible results (2-6 in a PTQ on Saturday, for example). I don’t, therefore, know all the ins and outs of the format. I don’t this matters, however.

A couple of weeks back, WotC decided they’d run all the Pro Tours as Standard + latest Draft format. Based on response from the people who watch the streams, WotC recanted their decision and made the first Pro Tour of next year Modern. I guess their hand was somewhat forced, but its not that simple.

Duck Tales, part 1 – There Will Be Blood

akuduckWe started this summer with the session of Sailors at the Starless Sea and ended it during last weekend with a quickly made “hack” of Apocalypse World. As it was in the beginning so it was in the end and Sami was the one who orchesterated this mayhem.

In this post I’m going to discuss our methods of turning Disney’s loveable characters into whack-jobs that destroy all that we love in Duckburg. And I’ll do it in the Apocalypse Way. So it will not be for all (I’ll give you another warning when the sick stuff begins). Continue reading

Some notes on script-writing comics

For a long time I’ve been wanting to contribute to Guilds blog. I had thought of writing comics reviews, but being a lazy guy, it’s been mañana so far.. But then Aki asked me to write something about script-writing comics and I was tempted to take the challenge. Having just finished with my third script for a comic book I am still learning my ways in this art and I think it is now useful for me to write down some of the thoughts or principles that I’ve gathered..

EDH Deck Time: Damia and her Friends

I’ve limited myself to three colors in EDH from the beginning (which was a little bit over two years ago). It just lets me use my resources more efficiently, as white and red aren’t very good colors. Sure, they have a limited set of good cards, but those aren’t really that fun for me, as I’m not as much of an asshole when playing EDH than I have a reputation for.

Anyhow, as there have been plenty of new planeswalkers in the last few sets in my color (BUG), I decided it might be time to make a planeswalker deck. Who to guide them into battle? [scryfall]Damia, Sage of Stone[/scryfall]. Not particular reason for choosing her over [scryfall]The Mimeoplasm[/scryfall] or [scryfall]Vorosh, the Hunter[/scryfall], except that she’s probably going to work best because of the card advantage she provides.
