EDH Deck Time – Karlov and his Nightmarish Cat
After my Nethroi and Umori combo I started to think about other potential companions. [scryfall]Lurrus of the Dream-Den[/scryfall] seems like a very antithetical companion for EDH, so hypothetically what would one do with it?
There’s only two options for commander.
Although they do pretty much the same thing, I decided to go with the latter.
EDH Deck Time: Nethroi + Umori
Just making this more complicated for myself by including Umori in all this, but why not? The format is supposed to be about fun, right? Also, I don’t really play white, because of reasons (it’s my least favorite color, which lead me into not really investing in white cards, which has saved me a lot of money over the years), so this is going to be Golgari despite Nethroi’s color identity. I’m not going to stay away from free white sources, so technically you can cast Nethroi without mutating, but that is not the plan.
EDH Deck Time: Borderlands (yes, the video game)
I was watching EDH and Chill, where they had a video game theme. What game would I use for such a purpose? I’ll probably make a series of this at some point, because games like Binding of Isaac and Dishonored (both of which I actually like more than the game I’m about to go into) would make interesting decks as well.
But, as I’ve been playing plenty of Borderlands 3 lately, Borderlands it is. But with a very specific view of the world.
Benchmarking Creatures in MtG Standard (early 2020)
Wow, no posts this year. Well, not to worry, there will be plenty soon, as I’ve had a bigger project going on since summer.
Anyhow, in his book, Next Level Deckbuilding, Patrick Chapin talked about benchmarking creatures. He didn’t actually use the word ‘benchmark’, but that’s what I’m using. Well, that was 2013, so quite a few things have changed since then, so perhaps it’s time to update that.
My Poro Tour Invitational Experience
Yes, if you are not Finnish, that is Poro Invitational. Poromagia is a Finnish game store, so the pun is just kind of obvious. Poro Tour itself consists of four tournaments. This year it was Standard, Sealed and Modern twice. There’s also a bunch of other tournaments, which grant you a few points.
I made it into the finals of the Standard and did fairly well in the Sealed. The Moderns… weell, not good. Don’t tell my team that I might not have taken those tournaments very seriously. Modern just isn’t my format. Based on this I wasn’t really expecting to be invited into the Invitational, but after some people above me in the rankings had to drop out, I made it in from the reserve spots.
Historic Brews
This seems to have largely flown under the radar, but yesterday WotC gave us a list of cards which are going to be added to Magic Arena a week from now for the Historic format. The cards are:

A colleague told me that his kid was getting into Magic. Since I have a largish collection of draft chaff, I thought I might make the kid and his friend a couple of decks.
