Today’s the release and as currently unemployed, I’ve had the time to think about what to play. The ideas are pretty endless, but the problem is that I won’t have access to everything today, so I’ve used what I have been able to trade for (and I’ll actually get some of the cards I’ve bought later today, because it pays to be close to a professional seller).
So, after a lot of consideration, I decided to have a test run with [scryfall]Goblin Dark-Dwellers[/scryfall].
Not enough one-drops for either of these, but what can you do? They can’t really make more [scryfall]Monastery Swiftspear[/scryfall]s.
For whatever reason, I find the title funny, because it only makes sense to MtG players.
Anyway, the other day I made a couple of two-colored lists around the devoid mechanic. Later I realized I completely forgot about this card:
… which kind of makes things easier.
When a set comes out, I have a habit of getting sets of cards I think have potential. These cards generally do something kind of unique within the format and I could see them being used somewhere. Than, they just sort of fizzle out, because they don’t fit into the decks they could go into, because they compete for spots on the curve with stronger cards and they don’t really fit into the format because of [scryfall]Siege Rhino[/scryfall]. You wouldn’t believe how many of these fell through for that very reason.. Sigh.
… but hey, brewing is fun, so I made a list of cards I wanted to highlight and brew with. I’m not going to brew with all of them, but I’ll still list all of them.
I’ve seen some attempts at this already without OGW and they seem fine, but somewhat lacking. But OGW brings plenty of new tools, some of which might fly under the radar, because they aren’t splashy mythics.
Just before Christmas, when I was looking for something different to play, I tried out this list in a tournament: U/G Megamorph. I went 2-2. Not very good, but the games I lost were still quite competitive and I think with some practice I may have done better with the deck.

Of course, the cards that really have an impact don’t always need to be the mythics.

It seems to have a fairly high presale price, so I guess people think its pretty good. So, I’ll brew a bit.
First: This is speculation. Not many cards are out, so I can’t really say how many sources for colorless mana you’ll have, but I’m basing this on the idea that we only have the [scryfall]Wastes[/scryfall] as a source.
There was a question on our forums about what we read and listen to on the Internet regarding MtG. There’s a lot of stuff I read and some stuff I listen to, but it also occurred to me that the person asking the question is not an experienced deckbuilder, so I might want to direct him to something about those basics.
So, what did I come up with? Nothing.
