EDH Deck Time: Damia and her Friends

I’ve limited myself to three colors in EDH from the beginning (which was a little bit over two years ago). It just lets me use my resources more efficiently, as white and red aren’t very good colors. Sure, they have a limited set of good cards, but those aren’t really that fun for me, as I’m not as much of an asshole when playing EDH than I have a reputation for.

Anyhow, as there have been plenty of new planeswalkers in the last few sets in my color (BUG), I decided it might be time to make a planeswalker deck. Who to guide them into battle? [scryfall]Damia, Sage of Stone[/scryfall]. Not particular reason for choosing her over [scryfall]The Mimeoplasm[/scryfall] or [scryfall]Vorosh, the Hunter[/scryfall], except that she’s probably going to work best because of the card advantage she provides.

Khans of Tarkir: The First Spoiler (and a Couple of Words on Commander 2014)

San Diego ComicCon is going on right now, and (this year) it means a first look at three new products. There was the Commander 2014, including Teferi’s planeswalker version, which carries a line at the end letting you play him as a commander, and several sweepers from the From the Vaults: Annihilation (although no [scryfall]Damnation[/scryfall] thusfar, which I would have thought to be a good selling point for the set), and a couple of cards from the next Duel Deck, including this fellow:

zurgohelmsmasher1

Zurgo is also the face for Khans of Tarkir, and included in that set as well.

EDH Pauper Deck Time: Species Gorger

I mentioned this possibility before in my article on my Crypt Rats deck. There I was thinking that this deck might be a little too much EDH and not enough Pauper. However, despite this, [scryfall]Species Gorger[/scryfall] definitely has an appeal to me as a commander. Its just a matter of finding enough creatures with ETB and LTB abilities at common.

Mid-Spoiler Week Journey Into Nyx Feelings

We’ve seen 30 or so cards thusfar, so its time to start brewing, but its also as important to look at how things will change for our deck. Not only what new cards we’ll have, but also what new cards will you have to face in the future. After all, decks are always about the context and if the metagame changes, your deck might take some splash damage. I know my deck will become worse if Pure Aggro strategies become more commonplace, as they seem to have done in the past few weeks.

EDH Pauper Deck Time: Crypt Rats

I was thinking about making a [scryfall]Species Gorger[/scryfall] deck and I probably eventually will, but I felt I would be trying to play EDH in Pauper. Granted, that’s the idea, but I would rather use wholly different approaches. With Pauper, I have a chance to rethink stuff, so I decided to go to another direction, again trying to use the resources I have readily available, namely mana.

So, where to dump the mana? There was a shade back in alpha and there’s been a shade in the core set and most blocks ever since. (I didn’t check, but I’m pretty sure.) They’ve never been for the Spikes out there, but apparently they have their fans, as they’ve survived for so long. However, they could be very good in EDH.

So, the question is, who do we get to lead this pack?

Playing Weenie in EDH (Monoblue Sygg)

I’ve been playing with a [scryfall]Sygg, River Cutthroat[/scryfall] deck lately. I have a tendency to change my decks quite often, but I just wanted to play a weenie strategy after not doing so for a while. This isn’t as good as the [scryfall]Edric, Spymaster of Trest[/scryfall], but there’s also the point of not being overbearing. Edric will just win most of the games, even if the other players combine their forces from the beginning. Edric just happens to be so fast.

So, if winning is your only goal, use Edric (this deck didn’t not win once during its lifetime). Otherwise read on.

Card Spotlight: Peregrination

1. A travel or journey, especially by foot, notably by a pilgrim.

Peregrination
Sorcery, 3G
Search your library for up to two basic land cards, reveal those cards, and put one onto the battlefield tapped and the other into your hand. Shuffle your library, then scry 1. (Look at the top card of your library. You may put that card on the bottom of your library.)

[scryfall]Peregrination[/scryfall] is the latest ramp card, this time from Born of the Gods. The question here is pretty obvious: Is the higher mana cost really worth one more mana?

EDH Pauper Deck Time: Vizkopa Guildmage

Last time we played Pauper, there was a [scryfall]Vizkopa Guildmage[/scryfall] on the field. I had thought about using her as well, but didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes, so I didn’t. Still, this could be a truly repressive deck, so I thought I’d just design one, since this seems like an interesting choice for a general. However, this is Pauper and that means we don’t have that much room to maneuver.

EDH Pauper Deck Time: Centaur Battlemaster Voltron

So, I couldn’t leave this topic to yesterday’s [scryfall]Bloodbraid Elf[/scryfall] as I felt I could do more with a [scryfall]Centaur Battlemaster[/scryfall], a card I’ve grown very fond of in Theros limited, although our relationship is sometimes strained as I’ve [scryfall]Spark Jolt[/scryfall]ed and even [scryfall]Shredding Winds[/scryfall]’d my own battlemaster to grow it. But hey, its won me quite a few games, sometimes basically oneshotting an opponent.

So, what can I do with one in EDH?
