Battle for New Jersey Preview

Note: This is a preview. The game is not yet published, so much of what I say might change, and I was asked to not divulge anything too specific about the system.

Note 2: The designer of the game (Teemu Vilen) is a member of the guild and thus there might be some bias. I’d like to think there isn’t much, but you never know. Also, I let Teemu read this before publishing.

Battle for New Jersey is a game set in near future, where colonizing aliens have landed on earth in order to strip the planet of its resources. I guess they could be characterized as evil, but that would be shortsighted. But not to worry, a small group of humans have banded together to use their disparate skillsets to take back their neighborhood.

Escaping the Slave-Pits of Drazhu

slavepitsofdrazhuSummer in Finland is unstable at best. This tends to lead into a gambling event with the mother nature with your holidays. Usually it rains or at least is unnaturally cold when you have a few days of to visit a cabin. Not this time! It was as hot as it gets here and what did we do with this kind of a marvel on our hands? Covered away from direct sunlight, dug up our bags of d6s and try out the demo adventure for Dungeon World (download the adventure from the downloads section).

Hello Vietnam! or trying out the Regiment

hellovietnamLast Wednesday we went to a family cabin of mine with the plan for alcohol, sauna and games. Good times!

I had originally thought of hosting something of a Kaiju-themed evening with King of Tokio and an AWhack called Monster Force Terra by James Mullen. As I was feeling a bit sick at the morning I decided to take The Regiment hack by John Harper instead as I knew it would more or less run itself with the guys I was going to the cabin anyway.

Don’t Starve Review

Don’t Starve is a roguelike game. The art is quite unique and the game seems like fun. Its a game of discovery, as I’ve been playing it for a few days now, but I’m still sure what the game is about.

Note: This includes mild spoilers. If you want to discover absolutely everything for yourself, go out (or stay in, that works as well), buy the game, and play it yourself. I’m not going to discuss anything major though. In fact, I probably don’t even now anything that major yet.

Modern Event Deck Review

As is the tradition (I guess third time makes it a tradition, right? Right?), I didn’t just look at the list of the Modern Event Deck, but went out and played it in a real environment.

I decided not to wait until the next time I had a chance to play in a Modern FNM. Since there’s a local bar that runs events every Monday, and it happened to be Modern this week, it was an easy decision to join. Its pretty much the same crowd I’d see in a Modern FNM in our town anyhow.

Formula D Review

Note: This is not about the Street Racing version of the game. This is purely about the Formula version, where everyone is playing basically the same car.

Formula D is just what it says on the tin. Its Formula cars racing. But you don’t have to like the sport to enjoy the game. I definitely don’t like the sport, but I do enjoy the game very much. Same applies to other people I’ve played with. Its a push-your-luck game with a strong feel for the theme.

Dungeons & Dragons and Philosophy Review

This is a book from a series of books called Popular Culture and Philosophy. Although many of those books are based on very good properties, mostly they feel like novelties and are not very compelling to me with the exception of Monty Python and Philosophy, which I haven’t read, and this one. Shouldn’t have felt that compelled, but anyhow.

The subtitle of the book is “Raiding the Temple of Wisdom”. Apparently, there wasn’t much to loot there.

Review: Oceanhorn

I’ve been meaning to write on Oceanhorn for a long time. But for some reason I have been postponing it again and again.

Oceanhorn (published for iPhone and iPad) is often compared to The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker and not without a reason. Everyone who has ever played a Zelda game is right at home with this one with similar items, game structure and elements. Even the outlook of the game feel like playing Zelda and the marvellous music by Kalle Ylitalo, Kenji Ito and Nobuo Uematsu work with the same level. Continue reading
