Rivals of Ixalan Brews, pt. 3 – Big Red

Big Red has always been one of my favorite archetypes. Ben Stark already showed us that it’s possible, but now we have new tools. The two that feels the best are [scryfall]Etali, Primal Storm[/scryfall] and [scryfall]Dire Fleet Daredevil[/scryfall]. There’s also, possibly, [scryfall]Rekindling Phoenix[/scryfall], if the metagame is right.

Rivals of Ixalan Brews, pt. 1 – BU Pirates

I’ve sort of being looking forward to this, but there’s a problem. There just isn’t anything that would make a pirates deck better. I mean, there’s a couple of really strong Pirates. I like [scryfall]Warsail Marauder[/scryfall] and [scryfall]Dire Fleet Daredevil[/scryfall], but they both have problems. The Marauder’s ability just doesn’t do much, if all creatures you control already have evasion, and Daredevil is of the wrong color.

Duel Decks: Merfolk vs. Goblins Review

Once again, we sat down with Lauri and played some games with the decks as is. I found these much better than the last ones (Mind vs. Might), which just weren’t in any way interesting to play, but let’s look at them a little deeper before judging them.

So, why are they fighting exactly? I mean, Goblins live in the mountains and merfolk live in the sea. They might not really like each other, but I don’t think they have much of a reason to fight in general, because of their different habitats. The merfolk seem to be the aggressors here, because they have nine different ways to change lands into Islands. I guess they need more room for… some reason.

MtG Cube: Rise of the Machines

Recently I have found it difficult to guide the remains of my energy to any profitable direction; thus I have spent time brewing Magic. I started with putting together Card Kingdom battle decks so that I would always have a few casual decks at my summer cabin for random games. Then while watching newest Tolarian Community College video it recommended watching video about Cube. After watching it I just decided to put together my very first Cube. Aki kindly reminded me that this was something I could and should share here – so here we are!

Magical History of Blue Grizzly Bears

Continuing this voyage of weird corners of the Magic design, we come to [scryfall]Grizzly Bears[/scryfall], but I’m limiting this to a very specific subgroup of blue.

Why blue? Because it’s the only color that hasn’t received a true [scryfall]Grizzly Bear[/scryfall] yet, meaning a 2/2 vanilla creature with a casting cost of 1U.

There’s a total of 204 2/2 creatures with a casting cost of 1C (including Un-Cards). Each other color has some of them and has even creatures that are strictly better than that. It took a while for black and red to get to that point, but here we are and now they aren’t even interesting any more. But blue is still making it’s way towards that goal and I’m not sure it will ever reach it. (Although it should be noted that in order to be truly strictly worse or better than something, the cards should be of the same color.)

Blue only has ten Grizzly Bears throughout the history of the game, and I’m going to leave out the Un-Card, which leaves us with nine total, meaning that they are quite rare.
