Standard Deck Time: Monogreen Aggro

I’ve been a bit burnt out lately with my Suicide Black deck. Its still pretty good, but I just don’t seem to have the fire to play with it that I used to, so I’m getting sloppy. This means its time to look for something different. Gladly, some guy called Mason Lange played a monogreen aggro deck in a recent StarCityGames Open. That seemed like something to build on.

Journey Into Nyx Brews, pt. 1

Spoilers have begun and the prereleases are less then two weeks away, so its time to begin the brewing. Starting with the gods, which seem to be very, very powerful. (Note: Pharika wasn’t spoiled when I first wrote this, but now that she has, I’m not sure I’d want to brew with her. Feels like a sideboard card to me.)

Mid-Spoiler Week Journey Into Nyx Feelings

We’ve seen 30 or so cards thusfar, so its time to start brewing, but its also as important to look at how things will change for our deck. Not only what new cards we’ll have, but also what new cards will you have to face in the future. After all, decks are always about the context and if the metagame changes, your deck might take some splash damage. I know my deck will become worse if Pure Aggro strategies become more commonplace, as they seem to have done in the past few weeks.

Starting MtG

This question was brought up in our forums recently. It was pretty off-handed and the ensueing discussion wasn’t really indepth, but it made me think. What do I have for the starting player?

First, I’m not going to talk about the rules. I’m sure there’s plenty of places for that. The Mothership (DailyMtG) has its own material. I’m going to emphasize your approach to games in general.

The thing about Magic is that it can be daunting to start. Not only is the game pretty complex (although a lot of work has been done to make it more beginner friendly and your usual games don’t necessarily delve that deeply into the finer points of the rules), but there’s also so many different products and formats, they will discourage many. And then there’s the question of money… Which we’ll get into later.

Playing Suicide King

Building a deck is all about context. Sure, some cards will be weak in any context, but even well thought-out decks will fail if the other decks in the metagame aren’t considered in the process. Even within a format certain decks can thrive in a certain meta and falter if moved to another environment. Just look at Frank Karsten’s article on the worst Pro Tour winning decks. Some of those are unthinkable today due to changes in card quality, but they weren’t that good in their day either. They just happened to be just the right deck for that particular tournament.

Me and Clyde Martin

I was watching Grand Prix Cincinnatti coverage. I got in pretty late, because of reasons, so I started watching from the quarterfinals and since it was very late in Finland, I only watched through semifinals. Besides the only interesting Esper Control game ever (where Brad Nelson had pretty much the greatest comeback of all time), I saw this old guy playing a version of my current deck, which I’ve been calling Suicide King.

Its when I heard his story being told by the coverage team when this became very interesting to me.

Mainboard Naturalize

I don’t usually metagame that much. I would much rather play a deck I like and hope its good than try to metagame and play a deck I don’t necessarily like as much and which will cost me a lot of money. However, there’s of course room to metagame within the decks.

Right now, I think one good metagame question is whether you should play [scryfall]Naturalize[/scryfall] mainboard.
