A few weeks back I was looking at the schedule of my local art house theater and noticed a movie I hadn’t heard about: Sound of Violence, or Conductor in major markets. For some reason, the blurb mentions James Jagger being part of the cast. He is actually only third billed, but because of his parentage (Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall), he is still the one used in marketing. And his parents were specifically mentioned as well.

Why Wasn’t Nightmare Alley Very Good?
Just make sure that you are not reading this on false pretenses, I don’t actually have an answer here. Sorry, if that was what you were looking for.
Also, I didn’t hate the movie. I just didn’t find it was very good. But since everything seems to be working in it’s favor, I found it weird that I just didn’t like it that much.
My Top 10 Movies of 2021 (draft version)
For once, I’m early. Usually I’ve seen quite a limited number of movies from a specific year at this point.
You Should Not Be Afraid of Spoilers
This is about spoilers, so it is going to include spoilers on various films and one TV show. These include Witness for the Prosecution, Anatomy of a Murder, The Matrix, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Squid Game and I Don’t Want to Be a Man. All of which you’ve already seen or never will.
Racism in Post-Racial Hollywood
I was working on my Netflix queue yesterday and as part of this watched The Harder They Fall. It’s a pretty new western with all the named characters being black. (And yes, like the movie informs us in the beginning, there were plenty of black people in the so-called Wild West.)
MPAA’s Impact on Mainstream Culture
Let’s talk about movie ratings.
Pasolini’s Theorem
Openly gay, atheist and communist in a society that found each of these unacceptable. No wonder I find Pier Paolo Pasolini one of my favorite directors. The thing is, his movies are not my favorites. They are fine and interesting, but not something I’ll go back and watch again and again.
My Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2020
I still haven’t seen even half of the movies from 2020 I usually see from a specific year, because… well… you know why, but I guess I’ve seen enough to make this list. At least I’ve seeen enough good movies. The situation did apparently mean that movies with smaller budgets rule this list, as the bigger ones were either pushed back or are behind paywalls I’m not interested in paying.
Ten Movies I Would Like to See in a Curriculum
Note: Not the top 10 movies or anything like that. This is more about contemplating what we could teach by showing movies to kids. Well, teenagers in some cases.
Aki Vs. Evil – Hausu (House) plus Epilogue
Yes, I did actively save this to be the last movie I do in this series. If you have never seen it, you might not understand why, but I also bet there’s plenty of readers who are nodding right now in agreement, because this movie is something else.
