Let’s wash away the bad taste of Night of the Living Deb with something great. And yes, there might be many good to excellent horror comedies, but great ones are a rare breed indeed. This is easily one of them. It’s too soon to call it a classic even though I might want to. I guess I have to wait another 23 years to do so (although comedies tend to age poorly, so I can’t know if I would even feel this way in a couple of years – except that comedy usually ages poorly due to making fun of unprotected minorities, which I don’t expect rich people to reach any time soon).

Aki Vs. Evil: Night of the Living Deb
I didn’t want to write about this one, but since I kept running into this in various lists of good or best horror comedies. It just happens to be the worst one I’ve seen. Sure, I assume certain parodies of horror movies are worse, but since I haven’t seen those, I couldn’t really tell you.
Aki Vs. Evil: He Never Died
This feels like it’s based on an obscure graphic novel, like something that’s actively trying to subvert certain tropes of superhero comics. It’s not, which probably means that these are now a genre onto themselves.
Aki Vs. Evil: Nina Forever
Rob and Holly are in the early stages of their relationship. There is a problem though. When they try to have sex, Nina, Rob’s dead girlfriend keeps visiting them.
Aki Vs. Evil: Taxidermia – Some Comedy Just Isn’t For Everyone
My last installment was a nice little horror comedy musical about zombies. In order to show the breadth of the genre, I decided to go as far as possible from it. So, I thought this weird little Hungarian body horror film about there generations of men trying to find their place in the world.
Aki Vs. Evil: Anna and the Apocalypse
I wasn’t sure I wanted to include this one, as it’s not much of a horror movie, because the musical numbers take the edge off the horror scenes. Still, it is Christmas time (well, it was when I started writing this) and this is a Christmas movie, so why not?
Aki Vs. Evil: Better Watch Out – Safe Neighborhood = Safe Harbour for Psychos
This is only tangentially a Christmas movie, as it does happen at Christmas time, but the themes of the movie are not Christmas related. It does lend itself to explaining certain things about the environment, namely all the decorations used in the film.
Aki Vs. Evil: Behind the Mask – The Rise of Leslie Vernon
I was going to do various Chrismas horror comedies first, but then this sort of fell into my lap.
Behind the Mask – The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a 2006 mockumentary, not to be confused with the actual documentary about animal rights activists called Behind the Mask released in the same year.
Aki Vs. Evil: Krampus – The Unlikely Christmas Classic
If you have an interest in movies in general, you should see this movie. Sure, it’s easy to see as pop culture trash, but it’s also masterful in it’s execution. Just the sound alone is an excellent example of how you really need to take that part of the movie into account, as so much of the mood is just purely built on that.
Now, I am not a big fan of Christmas. In fact, I do try to avoid family gatherings in general, but the importance put on Christmas just feels so awkward and unnecessary.
Aki Vs. Evil: Introduction, part 2
I’ve been mulling this over for the last two days and during that time I’ve felt the need to explain what I’m going for in some more detail.
