Pioneering (Brewing for Pioneer)

Ah, a new format. Well, sort of. It’s quite obvious that the first decks out there will be strong decks from Standards past or light versions of Modern decks. Like Rally or Saheeli Cat. I’m not going that route.

Me being me, the first thing I thought about was monoblack aggro. I’m not sure you really want to play this specific mix of one-drops, nor am I sure you don’t want extra discard, but this is what I would start with.

[deck]
[creatures]
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Gutterbones
4 Bloodsoaked Champion
4 Gnarled Scarhide
4 Gravecrawler
4 Scrapheap Scrounger
4 Mogis’s Marauder
[/creatures]
[spells]
4 Thoughtseize
4 Fatal Push
4 Grasp of Darkness
[/spells]
[lands]
20 Swamp
[/lands]
[/deck]

It might be a good idea to look at other options for the manabase as well, as we do have plenty of good monocolored options these days.

Next, the other archetype I always seem to fall back on: Big Red.

[deck]
[creatures]
4 Dire Fleet Daredevil
4 Bonecrusher Giant
4 Flamewake Phoenix
4 Thunderbreak Regent
4 Glorybringer
[/creatures]
[spells]
4 Shock
4 Lightning Strike
4 Slaying Fire
4 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
[/spells]
[lands]
24 Mountain
[/lands]
[/deck]

A lot of options here as well, but I’ve put some emphasis on card I’ve liked. Isn’t that what this is supposed to be about?

Something more interesting? How about Jund?

[deck]
[creatures]
4 Deathrite Shaman
4 Glint-Sleeve Siphoner
4 Courser of Kruphix
2 Gonti, Lord of Luxury
4 Goblin Dark-Dwellers
[/creatures]
[spells]
4 Traverse the Ulvenwald
4 Kolaghan’s Command
4 Thoughtseize
4 Fatal Push
2 Grasp of Darkness
[/spells]
[lands]
4 Fabled Passage
4 Stomping Ground
4 Blood Crypt
4 Overgrown Tomb
4 Forest
2 Swamp
2 Mountain
[/lands]
[/deck]

A bit problematic in many ways, but again, “cards I enjoy” has been a guiding principle here. I wouldn’t mind something to bolster the delirium component of the deck, but couldn’t really come up with anything.

I’m currently on vacation, so I’ll probably return with a few ideas soon. Don’t worry, those will be as idiosyncratic as these.
