Ixalan Brews, pt. 9 – Looking for Orazca

Back in the day, a long, long time ago, [scryfall]Icy Manipulator[/scryfall] was a great card, because you could use it to force an opponent to play more than one threat, so you could gain value from [scryfall]Wrath of God[/scryfall]. These days the ole Icy is long gone, but we do have [scryfall]Gideon of the Trials[/scryfall] and now [scryfall]Thaumatic Compass[/scryfall].

You still need to get over the initial hump, which might not be easy, because the amount of efficient removal seems to be at a local minimum. We might even have to think about using cards such as [scryfall]Compulsory Rest[/scryfall] or [scryfall]Impeccaple Timing[/scryfall]. Not really something you would like to do, but there we are. There is [scryfall]Skywhaler’s Shot[/scryfall] and [scryfall]Cast Out[/scryfall], but they are pretty expensive. Ixalan has [scryfall]Slash of Talons[/scryfall], which might be fairly strong in a meta full of Monored (which might be the situation where we end up, because dealing with [scryfall]Hazoret, the Fervent[/scryfall] seems pretty difficult without [scryfall]Stasis Snare[/scryfall] or [scryfall]Grasp of Darkness[/scryfall]).

On the other hand, maybe our control deck should be white-red instead of white-blue, as is the norm. Then we would have access to other good removal.

[deck]
[spells]
4 Gideon of the Trials
4 Thaumatic Compass
4 Fumigate
2 Hour of Devastation
4 Magma Spray
4 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
4 Abrade
4 Lightning Strike
4 Cast Out
[/spells]
[lands]
4 Inspiring Vantage
4 Stone Quarry
9 Plains
9 Mountain
[/lands]
[/deck]

The matchup against blue-based control decks is pretty bad, but otherwise, I don’t really know.
