Tiny Leaders Deck Time: Tetsuko Umezawa

I like her quite a bit and already designed a Commander deck around her, so let’s try this one as well. Feels pretty much like we only have to cut the EDH deck to pieces.

Here’s what her card says:

Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive
Legendary Creature — Human Rogue
Creatures you control with power or toughness 1 or less can’t be blocked.

Here’s what we’ll start with.

Daring SaboteurJeskai ElderJhessian ThiefMistblade ShinobiNeurok Commando
Riptide PilfererScroll ThiefSkyship PlundererSurrakar SpellbladeThrummingbird
Walker of Secret WaysWharf InfiltratorEternal of Harsh TruthsOphidianLooter Il-Kor
Tandem Lookout

That’s pretty much directly from my previous article. We’ll see how many of these we’ll actually play. I only had to cut Soul Seizer based on casting cost from these, so we’ll probably have to come back and make more later on.

Other things to enable gaining advantage from our creatures:

Jace, Cunning CastawayFireshriekerRogue’s GlovesSkeleton Key

Not sure we want to play all these, but these are something we’d be definitely interested in. However, I do think that besides Jace, these might be too clunky to use.

We need more creatures and we need ways to stay alive. So, first creatures that gain the ability from Tetsuko, which have other utility.

Stratus DancerVedalken AethermageVizier of Tumbling SandsVoid Stalker

Finally, I listed some spells.

CounterspellNegateSpell CrumpleHinderCyclonic Rift

That would be 39 cards for 49 slots. Suppose we want 18 lands, that means we need at least 8 cuts. I would also like to play certain other cards here.

Essence ScatterRemove SoulUnsummonVapor Snag

I think we can safely cut the three mana counterspells, so that’s a start, but with those changes we’ll be at 41 cards, meaning we need 10 cuts.

Let’s start by looking at the curve.

1 2 3
Dakra Mystic
Siren Stormchaser
 Daring Saboteur
Jeskai Elder
Riptide Pilferer
Skyship Plunderer
Wharf Infiltrator
Looter il-Kor
Stratus Dancer
Vedalken Aethermage
Void Stalker
Jhessian Thief
Mistblade Shinobi
Neurok Commando
Scroll Thief
Surrakar Spellblade
Walker of Secret Ways
Eternal of Harsh Truths
Tandem Lookout
Champion of Wits
Dulcet Sirens
Galvanic Alchemist
Nimble Obstructionist
Sea Gate Oracle
Serendib Sorcerer
Vizier of Tumbling Sands
Vapor Snag
Skeleton Key
Essence Scatter
Remove Soul
Cyclonic Rift
Rogue’s Gloves
Jace, Cunning Castaway

So, time to start cutting. Some are actually quite easy. Skyship Plunderer is quite useless here, as is Thrummingbird. Since our opponent can’t block anyhow, Dulcet Sirens seems unnecessary. After that, we should look at the curve and try to get rid of extra three drops. These seem to be the worst:

FireshriekerGalvanic AlchemistSea Gate OracleSurrakar SpellbladeWalker of Secret Ways
Tandem LookoutChampion of Wits

Admittedly, this means I have to take out plenty of cards I would have liked to play with, but they are the worst cards in the deck, I feel, so out they go.

  1. Interesting build with all the card draw. Have you tried this out this deck in multiplayer? How did it do?

    • Thank you.

No, I haven’t played this in a multiplayer environment, but I would suppose you have a pretty good political edge, because you can always alpha back and they don’t have much to block with. Of course, this is highly dependent on the meta. If Tetsuko always gets killed, the deck isn’t going to do much.
