Self-Appointed Flavor Judge: The Color of Hitler

Hitler is the go-to guy in history when you are looking for examples of evil, so most people would immediately think he was black, but is it really so. Well, the court is in session…

Here’s the thing: Black is not the color of evil. Its the color of amorality. Evil is a concept White has created, because it needs it to be able to call itself good in contrast. Since Black is an enemy of White, its easy to point at Black and call it evil. Is it really so? Have you ever been called something you aren’t?

Can’t White be evil? White is about society and organization. The rights of the many are more important than the rights of the individual. White only fights those it sees as threats, but it does have a habit of being overly careful and terminating possible threats preemptively. Even destroying blocking creatures is seen as fine. The very social structures White promotes can be evil. All those knights are exploiting someone for those nice shining armors.

Big Brother is clearly a White concept. You force your populace to conform to certain codes of conduct by observing them constantly. Isn’t that evil? Its clearly something Black wouldn’t want to do, since Black is all about individuality.

Hitler, on the other hand, was all about protecting his people against imagined threats thought to be evil. Black doesn’t even believe in evil. How can you be evil, if you are only looking out for your own interest? Why would Black call something else evil, if the whole concept is foreign to them? Calling Jews evil was a way to rally his people against a common enemy. Clearly a White tactic.

We have precedents for evil White characters. [scryfall]Heliod, God of the Sun[/scryfall] killed Elspeth, his own Champion, because he saw Elspeth as a new threat to the status quo, after she was able to kill Xenagos. [scryfall]Konda, Lord of Eiganjo[/scryfall] tried to change the whole world to protect his people, thus bringing about a major catastrophe.

So yeah, White isn’t as good as it likes to think it is.

Was Hitler White? Yes.

Of course, things are never that simple. Everyone has some of every color in them. Probably not enough to have each color in our casting cost, but still. Did Hitler have Red tendencies? Definitely, because he was passionate about what he was doing. Did he have Blue tendencies? Sure, because he did favor technology. What about Green? Yes, because Green is about tradition and Hitler liked tradition (even if all that talk of Aryans was pure bullshit). And Black? Yes, everyone is selfish at times.

Does Hitler have other colors in his casting cost? Maybe Green, but I’m not quite sure. Nazis weren’t any more about nature than most cultures, but Hitler was very interested in his perceived tradition. Instinctively I would like to say Hitler was White-Green, because I don’t like that color combination, but that would be intellectually dishonest, so I don’t want to do that. In the end, all the evidence points to him being mono-White.
