Purphoros, God of the Forge deals damage to opponents when a creature enters the battlefield under your control. Also, it can pump the power of all your creatures. Just a quick look over at all the red cards available in standard and we can find plenty of help here.
I’ve actually played a version of this once in an FNM. I didn’t do well, and I don’t expect this deck to do well in the future. I was hoping Born of the Gods would bring something new to the table, but that didn’t happen. There was Felhide Spiritbinder and Satyr Nyx-Smith, which can produce tokens, but I don’t feel the inspired creatures are just fast enough for standard. This deck is slow enough as it is, although there is potential for turn five kill in a couple of ways, but that’s not very probable.
The deck has a lot of synergy with plenty of stuff to trigger the Pyromancer, which in turn trigger the Purphoros. Then Purphoros or Battledriver can make those tokens better. Hammer will give everything haste and might enable Purphoros to become a creature every once in a while.
There’s plenty of land to ensure land drops for the first five or so turns, but those lands can also be used as fodder for the Hammer or just push them to the bottom with Magma Jets, or discard them with Wild Guesses. Both of these trigger the Pyromancer and so forth.
Still, all in all, this deck is mostly casual. A fun deck, but not to be taken as a serious contender. Perhaps it could do well in the right metagame, but I can’t identify the circumstances that would need to happen to make this deck competitive. I’ll probably take it out for a run again at some point, just because its different.
Children of Purphoros
BTW: Possible turn five kill:
2: Mountain into Young Pyromancer
3: Attack with Pyromancer (2), Mountain, Molten Birth, trigger Pyromancer
4: Attack with Pyromancer and three Elemental tokens (7), Mountain and either a) Purphoros, God of the Forge or b) Ogre Battledriver
5a): Attack with Pyromancer and three Elemental tokens (12), Mountain, cast Goblin Rally triggering Pyromancer for an Elemental token and thus triggering Purphoros for a total of 12 damage from six token creatures (24).
5b): Mountain, Goblin Rally, triggering the Battledriver, into attack with a bunch of tokens, six of which are 3/1 with haste and some are just 1/1s, plus the Battledriver and Pyromancer. Still, more than enough (33).
