Magic Core Set 2015 Brews

Thusfar, not that many ideas, but some.

How about a blue tempo deck. There are some pretty cheap creatures out there right now. Why not leverage them? Also, based on what Theros Block Constructed looks like, tempoing other decks out might very well be the way to go.

This is not a devotion deck. Instead, we’re trying to disrupt enough of our opponents plan to push 20 damage through. Or actually more, because of the ubiquity of [scryfall]Courser of Kruphix[/scryfall].

First, how many spells that target are there out there that don’t kill a creature? Plenty, but most of them are not played in Standard. Therefore, we might as well put [scryfall]Crystalline Nautilus[/scryfall] to a good use. Obviously, that’s not the new part. However, lets make this our top of the curve.

Well, actually, not quite. There’s a new 4/4 for three in M15. It just needs a bit of help.

So, basically we need to go at least to four, as we need to put at least one mana into another spell first. Which means we need one mana costing blue cards. Sadly, [scryfall]Unsummon[/scryfall] is not currently legal. Glardly, [scryfall]Void Snare[/scryfall] works almost as well for this purpose. Sure, Unsummon would be better in quite a few cases. Instant speed is very valuable, so we probably could use [scryfall]Voyage’s End[/scryfall], [scryfall]Cyclonic Rift[/scryfall], or even [scryfall]Peel from Reality[/scryfall].

On top of that, since [scryfall]Supreme Verdict[/scryfall] seems to be on the decline, and spot removal is up, we can definitely utilize [scryfall]Quickling[/scryfall], which can not only save our creatures, but can two for one them, because a 2/2 flier is pretty strong.

Maybe put in plenty of one mana creatures and as well [scryfall]Vaporkin[/scryfall] and [scryfall]Welkin Tern[/scryfall], which returns to the set.

We even have a new card advantage engine. Sure, its not as good as [scryfall]Bident of Thassa[/scryfall], but it also requires a lot less mana. Not sure its worth it, but hopefully.

I also feel there’s going to be a stronger token theme in the future. Again, if [scryfall]Supreme Verdict[/scryfall] is on its way out, we have actual room to maneuver with creatures.

Some existing cards that would work wonderfully with this theme are [scryfall]Elspeth, Sun’s Champion[/scryfall], [scryfall]Dictate of Heliod[/scryfall], [scryfall]Brimaz, King of Oreskos[/scryfall], [scryfall]Launch the Fleet[/scryfall], [scryfall]Heliod, God of the Sun[/scryfall], [scryfall]Archangel of Thune[/scryfall], [scryfall]Precinct Captain[/scryfall], [scryfall]Path of Bravery[/scryfall], and [scryfall]Spear of Heliod[/scryfall]. Also, [scryfall]Raise the Alarm[/scryfall] and [scryfall]Selfless Cathar[/scryfall] are making a return.

There are three new cards to tihnk about:

First problem we see is that we can’t really go in the old white weenie route here. We need to go midrange, and I’m not sure white is able to do that in the world of card advantage (although tokens can bring their own form of card advantage as well). I’d probably not use the Soul, because we can’t afford very many six drops and Elspeth is doing so much better work, especially if we don’t have creatures with a power of 4 or greater and our opponent does.

3 Archangel of Thune
4 Precinct Captain
3 Selfless Cathar

Probably no chance of working…
