Learn 2 Play Kangasala, 2017

Last week I happened to visit Kangasala Public Library and spotted an interesting poster – a local gaming event I hadn’t even heard of! Naturally I had to visit it and I’m really glad I did. Learn 2 Play Kangasala proved to be a great event with surprising amount of things going on.

The actual event took place during the weekend but I only had time to participate during Sunday. As it was local I decided to take my 7-year old son with me. Gentle guidance to great hobbies. You know the deal. Continue reading

Häme Medieval Faire 2016

This year’s Häme Medieval Faire was held at during August. Last year I was at a friend’s wedding and could not participate. But this year I made sure I would attend and went there with my son and his cousin. And it was even better than the last time around.

Häme Medieval Faire is an event held at the Häme Castle with all thing medieval. Naturally this means a lot of artisans selling their products but it’s also about historical reenactment. While two years ago there was a tournament this year’s main event was the landing of forces of Novgorod on Häme shores.

A Paean to Ropecon

If you ever went to Ropecon in Dipoli you know that the place is hard to forget, with its architecture of stone, glass, light wood, dark metal, and its hostility to straight angles. It offered a milieu for roleplaying (and other things) that felt home-made, welcoming, and original, but still professional enough. It wasn’t perfect and like everything that’s dear, you both loved and hated parts of it. The sucky bits were parts of the charm, so much so that I can’t even bear to write anything stronger than “sucky bits”.

Ropecon 2016: The Scenario Contest

A game of Yövuoro (The Night Shift).

A game of Yövuoro (The Night Shift).

Again, there was a short-form scenario contest at Ropecon. I managed to play in six of them, including all three that received a prize. I gave some feedback to the designers on individual games, but now that I can see the bigger picture, I’d like to point on some commonalities and offer critique that I hope will lead to more fun for everyone in the future. Ropecon 2016 – Last Thoughts Before Tomorrow

This year’s Ropecon starts tomorrow. This means a weekend of gaming, making new friends (and enemies) and a lot of weird events. This year might be even weirder since nobody knows how the new location will work out. Will it be so good that Ropecon enters a new renessaince or will it fall to chaos? We’ll just have to witness it ME!

“WITNESS ME!”

Here are a few last things to remember:

  • If you are not sure what games you should try, check out our recommendations.
  • This is a new location for the organizers as well; ask them about what you want to know but let them make mistakes.
  • Try a game you haven’t tried before. This is the main reason I go to Ropecon. It is an excellent chance to have a go with a new system or game.
  • At least consider larping. It isn’t for all but it is certainly something every should at least try.
  • Make the most of it! Ropecon is only once a year!
  • Follow this blog and our Instagram for updates, photos and first hand experiences.

Lastly I would like to (once again) remind you that if you need a photographer for your games or cosplay (etc.) don’t hesitate to find me or contact me. My time tables are flexible and if I’m not at the middle of a game I’m more than willing to take even more photos.

Great gaming for everyone!

Chaos & Order – Ropecon 2016

cosplay21This year’s Ropecon is getting closer and closer. And with it our speculations about the whole shenanigan grow wilder and wilder. For Ropecon has found a new location at Messukeskus Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre and older visitors that have grown accustomed to Dipoli will have to brave the wilds and dare to enter this new environment.

It will be interesting to see how the change of scenery affects the whole experience. I really liked the outdoor possibilities around Dipoli but I’m also willing to give Messukeskus a chance. It’s most likely be an experience heavily influenced with the chaos and order theme. Some people know what is going on and they’ll have to work really hard to establish order.
