Amonkhet Brews, pt. 15 – Can We Still Use Saheeli?

Last weekend I played a PPTQ. I didn’t do well, but whatever. I think my deck choice was pretty good. I just wasn’t playing optimally myself. However, what I wanted to talk about was Saheeli Rai.

The previous night, I was going to sleep, but for some reason I went back to thinking about my sideboard. My list was this (copied mostly from a SCG 9th place finish the previous weekend):

I was thinking of using the following sideboard:

GlorybringerGoblin Dark-DwellersMagma SprayMagma SprayMagma Spray
Chandra, Torch of DefianceChandra, Torch of DefianceRelease the GremlinsRelease the GremlinsWeaver of Lightning
Weaver of LightningWeaver of LightningSweltering SunSweltering SunMountain

I wasn’t sure about this, but I thought Jason Bennett (the original designer) had a better idea about what he was doing than I did, so I followed his plan with a couple of exceptions. His list (at least the version on SCG.com) was missing a couple of cards and of the cards listed I was missing the fourth Glorybringer. So, I made some additions and changes.

At last minute (not exactly, but for dramatic reasons, let’s call it ‘last minute’) my mind went to Saheeli. Would she fit here? Would she be good in some grindy matchup? I thought the answer would be yes, because I could always bring her in in the very grindy matchups. She’ll kill the opponent eventually, if they don’t have anything for her.

But the deck as a whole also got me thinking. Copying Glorybringer or Goblin Dark-Dwellers isn’t exactly bad either. Or even copying Bedlam Reveler. Okay. Maybe I’m onto something…

Probably not, but still, here’s a list (think Copy Cat without having to delve into white):
