Dragons of Tarkir Brews, pt. 2 – White Weenie

As one of the mainstay archetypes in the game, White Weenie always seems to be around… Except that right now it isn’t. Sure, there’s BW-Warriors deck out there, but its not quite the same. The problem is that there aren’t usable two drops out there. Sure, there are two-drops such as [scryfall]Seeker of the Way[/scryfall], but you don’t necessarily want that for your weenie deck, which is going to be full of creatures.

Thankfully, Dragons of Tarkir brings us a couple of good ones. And I have a plan…

The translation on Anafenza on MythicSpoiler.com is as follows:

Whenever another nontoken creature enters the battlefield under your control, bolster 1.

… and here’s my secret weapon:

See the synergy? I’m going to go even further with that.

[deck]
[creatures]
4 Soldier of the Pantheon
4 Mardu Woe-Reaper
1 Herald of Anafenza
4 Anafenza, Spirit of the Family Tree
4 Hidden Dragonslayer
1 Seeker of the Way
4 Brimaz, King of Oreskos
4 Abzan Falconer
1 High Sentinels of Arashin
[/creatures]
[spells]
4 Citadel Siege
4 Ajani Steadfast
2 Feat of Resistance
[/spells]
[lands]
23 Plains
[/lands]
[/deck]

The legendary and planeswalker rules might come and bite us here, but I’d be willing to take the risk. A bit like monoblue devotion, its a linear aggro deck. You cast a number of creatures and hopefully you’ll get them all in the air and attacking by turn four, doing hopefully enough damage before the opponent can stabilize. Flying is very strong, especially if you can grow the flying creatures.

The +1/+1 counters are everywhere and will devastate your opponents who rely on burn to control your creatures. Other spot removal (such as [scryfall]Ultimate Price[/scryfall]) will be devastating.

This deck is very suspectable to sweepers and the sideboard definitely would need soemthing against control decks. Probably [scryfall]Ajani’s Presence[/scryfall].

Another option from Dragons of Tarkir is [scryfall]Arashin Foremost[/scryfall].

Getting a few counters on [scryfall]Brimaz, King of Oreskos[/scryfall] and then both flying and double strike will be pretty good. I would need to test this whole thing to find out.

  1. A little bit. Right now I’d go a little lighter on Ajani’s, take out the Herald and put a couple of [card]Dragon Hunter[/card]s in. [card]Mastery of the Unseen[/card] might also be an option, as well as putting a couple of [card]Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx[/card] into the deck. It’s been very good with High Sentinels, but is completely useless in certain match-ups. With this many double whites in mana costs, it also has the tendency to lead to a bit more mulliganing.

  2. I think nikthos is reserved for when you want to take another path (Heliod, Elspeth, Evangel of Heliod, Secure the Wastes, etc)
Why not Gleam of Authority instead of High Sentinels of Arashin?
And too many creaatures leaves you vulnerable to high disrupt decks, why no cut 1 Dragonslayer, 2 Brimaz, 1 Falconer, 1 Ajani and 1 Siege; and instead of those, put in 4 gods willing and 2 valorous stance.
I am too brewing a WW myself, too many ideas with Anafenza actually (preeminent captain+paragon of new dawns?, seekers and artful maneuver?, all 2 toughness and 4 falconer?, 18 cost W 2/1 with anafenza and spears and hall?) so any progress that you can share will be veeery apreciated.-

  3. [card]Gleam of Authority[/card] is pretty bad in constructed. Too much removal. You’ll just two-for-one yourself.

Never, ever skimp on [card]Abzan Falconer[/card] in this deck. Its not a good deck, but the times you do win, you win with Falconer.

I don’t think you want to put too much emphasis on protecting your creatures. If you want to curve out (and you do), you don’t have many chances to use those spells. Also, Anafenza requires a critical mass of creatures to function properly, as does Ajani.

Gladly, sweepers are not played that much currently. Even the control decks generally play only two [card]Crux of Fate[/card] main deck, so you can often just curve out nicely.

All in all, this deck is in a bad place right now. Something like [card]Brave the Elements[/card] would work nicely, if we ever get it again in Magic: Origins, but I don’t see this working out otherwise. Fun to play, just not very competitive.
